Season Preview: Western Conference Challengers-Denver Nuggets
After a breakthrough year for the team in 2018/19 the Denver Nuggets will be looking to cause problems for the leagues big boys once again.
The Nuggets made it to the conference semi-finals last term and with Nikola Jokic and Jamaal Murray leading their team they will certainly be aiming to maybe even go one better this time around.
The Joker ready for another big year:
Nikola Jokic has impressed since coming into the league but really announced himself last year, making his first all star appearance and being named on the All NBA First Team. The big man playmaker is a unique talent and if he can take further strides this season, the Nuggets can certainly hope to challenge in the West. While it is a tough field, the unique talents of Jokic could lead to him being in the MVP conversation as the season progress. That may be getting ahead of ourselves but he alongside Jamaal Murray will once again provide a talented base for the Nuggets to flurish.
Trusting the process proving important for Denver:
This team has been built up since Jokic was drafted in 2014 and the Nuggets have committed to building the right team around, while also seeing Jokic exceed expectations. It is still a young team and they are probably one or two players short to really be considered challengers this year but nobody will want to face this team and the Nuggets remain in a great position to be challengers for many years to come.
Michael Porter could prove a trump card for Nuggets:
The Nuggets drafted Porter Jr at number 14 in the 2018 draft but he was forced to sit out his entire rookie season due to injury. Porter Jr had originally been tipped to be a No.1 pick but dropped after teams found out about his injury problems. If he can stay fit, he will added a lot to this Denver team and would likely become the third star in this Nuggets team. He will certainly be aiming to challenge Zion Williamson for rookie of the year and hopefully he'll show the Denver fans what they missed last season.
While they are certainly an outside shout this Denver team have got great quality on both ends of the court and while they will struggle to reach the heights of last year, another big year from Jokic & Murray could have them right up there.
Season Prediction: 47-35, 5th place in the West
The Nuggets travel to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers in their opening game of the season in the early hours of Thursday morning.
