Luka magic beats the Grizzlies

Luka Doncic stepped up with an outrageous off balance three as time expired to give Dallas a last gasp victory on Wednesday night and get the team back on track after defeats against San Antonio & Philadelphia.

Memphis will feel hard done by with the manor of their defeat, especially as they have now won just one of their last four games.

Doncic struggled to begin the game and finished the first quarter with just three points, the Mavs dug in and led early before Memphis fought back to lead by two after one.

The Grizzlies stretched their lead to as big as nine in the second as Luka continued to struggle but they were unable to pull away from Dallas eventually adding just one point to their first quarter lead. HT: Dallas 57-60 Memphis.

Doncic finished the first half with just four points but he did have seven assists which helped keep his team in the game at the half.

Things appeared to be going from bad to worse for Doncic as he began the second half with a turnover but he then proceeded to drop 14 points quarter.

Memphis were once again the dominant team in the third quarter as they extended their lead to six points despite the exploits of Luka and the Mavs.

The Mavs bench fought hard to begin the fourth and a JJ Reddick three pointer even gave Dallas a one point lead before Memphis went on a 7-0 run to stretch their lead back out to six. Dorian Finney Smith hit a treble with just over three minutes remaining to level the scores for the first time since the first quarter but the Grizzlies remained resilient and were back up by five with just over a minute to go.

The home team were looking to ice the game as Ja Morant drove for the rim but Luka stepped in to steal the ball from his hands. Doncic then closed the game to within one following a Porzingis bucket.

The pressure was put back on the Mavs however as Morant hit a pair of free throws but Luka could only hit one of two at the line in reply with just 3.2 seconds remaining. Free throws were the 'Achilles' Heel' for Memphis on Friday against the Knicks and proved so again as Grayson Allen missed a pair that would have put the game beyond Dallas.

The Mavericks called timout with just 1.8 seconds remaining, which allowed them to advance the ball, where Maxi Kleber found Luka Doncic and as he stubbled through a pair of Grizzlies defenders he got his shot up and in, to give the Mavericks the most dramatic of victories as time expired.

Dallas have now won 30 games this season and sit just one game back on the sixth placed Blazers in the West while Memphis stay above .500 & look set for a place in the play-in tournament.
