Anthony Martial-The Enigma
Anthony Martial has been a bitter disappointment so far this season coming off the back of his best ever scoring season but in Sunday's derby game he showed all the qualities that make him a coveted piece of real estate.
The Frenchman has to be a nightmare to play alongside or manage because of the way his form dips and dives. Martial is an enigma, if his first touch in a game is a positive dribble or pass forward then you usually get an honest performance but if he doesn't get an early touch or he loses the ball early in the game you may aswell sub him off there and then because he isn't going to do a thing for his team.
Luckily for Man Utd his first involvement on Sunday was him picking the ball up in City's penalty area and winning the spot kick that put United ahead within the first minute and a positive performance duly followed, which earned him the Man of the Match award. Now, Martial's performance on Sunday was far from perfect but it was the minimum you should see out of a Manchester United striker, especially in a big game.
Many United fans would have been disappointed to not see Edison Cavani in the starting team but Martial silenced his doubters even if he didn't manage to get a goal. The 25 year old's performance was highlighted by driving runs forward and solid hold up play as he appeared to show a return to the confident nature we saw from Martial last season, we should be expecting similar performances heading towards the international break but that is not how Tony works, his game by game form is determined by his first touch in each individual game.
Maybe Martial just likes playing against City, having scored in both meetings last season and although he didn't score this time around he won the penalty and played arguably his best game of the season. Nobody quite knows if this is a sign of things to come from the Frenchman but next time you watch him play keep an eye on his first touch in a game and see what sort of performance follows. THE ENIGMA....
